Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa is a large, sprawling city in Orange Country. At the time of the 2010 U.S. census the population of the city was 110,230. Since Costa Mesa’s official incorporation in 1953, the city has grown from a small, semi-rural farming community into a primarily suburban area, and is a borderline city with an economy based on light manufacturing, commerce, and retail industries. The primary reason for this population surge happened during and immediately after World War II. Thousands of soldiers trained at the army base in nearby Santa Ana, and returned after the war, settling into Costa Mesa with their families. Within the three decades after it’s incorporation, the city's population had over quadrupled. Costa Mesa lies about 38 miles southeast of Los Angeles, 90 miles north of San Diego, and 430 miles to the south of San Francisco. As a whole Costa Mesa encompasses a total area of 16 square miles, with the city’s southernmost border being less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Most of the 16 square miles is comprised of land, with less than .1 square mile of the city being made up of water. The local economy of Costa Mesa relies heavily on the retail and services business. The biggest center of commercial activity in the city is the South Coast Plaza, a shopping center well known for its large size and beautiful architecture. The number of sales made by South Coast Plaza, on the strength of its 317 different stores, put it among the premier shopping centers in the entire country. The center generates more than a billion dollars per year. The city does also make home to some manufacturing activity, mostly in the more industrial southwestern quarter, which is home to a number of pharmaceutical, plastic and electronic firms. The commercial district around the South Coast Plaza, which contains parts of both southern Santa Ana and northern Costa Mesa, sometimes is called the South Coast Metro. The South Coast Repertory Theater and Orange County Performing Arts Center are also based in Costa Mesa. The local newspaper, the Daily Pilot, is operated, printed and owned by the Los Angeles Times. Emulex, L-R-G, Volcom, El Pollo Loco, Hurley, Ceradyne, and RVCA are among the many businesses that are headquartered in the city.
